Arrest transgender people to the right path: Controversial statement by Malaysian minister

Malaysia, Ta. 17 July 2020, Friday

Malaysia's Minister of Religious Affairs Zulkifli Mohammed has come under fire for his bizarre proposal. Zulfikar Mohammed has called for educating transgender people after their arrest. Zulfikali is facing all sorts of criticism because of his proposal. Malaysian social workers are opposing Zulfikali's proposal.

According to social activists, human rights are not protected here already and the proposal would be a further blow to transgender people. Zulfikali Mohammed of the Perikatan coalition, which came to power after a political coup, recently announced that it had given full license to Islamic authorities to bring transgender people back to the right path.

"Islam is a religion that seeks to educate," Zulfikali Mohammed wrote in a Facebook post. We will work towards the concerted efforts of all the agencies under the Wing of Religious Affairs in the Prime Minister's Department. ' Activists are outraged after Zulkifli's announcement. Activists say the coalition has taken a number of decisions in the four months since it came to power that violate human rights.

Activists say the government cracked down on union members and journalists after coming to power and banned a book written on the 2018 general election. "The proposal will encourage violence," said Mitch Usmer Youssef, executive director of the Seed Foundation, which leads the transgender community. We saw this during the Barrison government and no action was taken at that time.

"We know what this is all about," Yusuf said. All this is due to power. His goal is to gain public trust and votes by making a statement about how easily a scapegoat can be made. We have been victims of this many times. We know when this risk can be serious. '

The NGO called the minister's words irresponsible. According to the organization, her statement would increase mistreatment, discrimination, violence and mistreatment of transgender women. We are already concerned about the safety of transgender people across the country.
