FAMU is reinstituting a curfew for students living on campus, beginning midnight Saturday until further notice. The move comes as the nation has seen a surge in new COVID-19 cases. Friday was the 12th straight day in which new US coronavirus cases topped 100,000 new cases. Friday was the third straight day that the U.S. hit a new record high with more than 177,000 new cases.
Under the FAMU curfew, students must remain in their assigned residence hall from 10 p.m.-6 a.m. Monday-Thursday and from 12 a.m.-6 a.m. Friday-Sunday.
Students who disregard the curfew will be subject to sanctions, up to suspension and expulsion from the university.
For the week ending Nov. 6, FAMU said 17 students self-reported positive COVID-19 tests, compared to 11 students the previous week. For the month of October, 29 students reported testing positive for the virus.
FAMU's rules also prohibit gatherings of more than 10 individuals, gatherings of 10 or fewer must be in a space that allows for physical distancing of 6 or more feet, and mandates that face coverings must be worn at all times inside university buildings.
