I love the people of India and China, I will do anything for peace: Trump

Washington, Ta. 17 July 2020, Friday

Amidst strained relations with China, US President Donald Trump himself declared that he loves the people of India and China very much.

White House Press Secretary Kelly McKinney said Thursday that Trump is ready to make every possible effort to bring peace between India and China. "Peace is essential for the well-being of the people of both countries and I am ready to do anything to restore it," Trump said.

The Trump administration has openly backed India after violent clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galvan Valley in eastern Ladakh. The US Secretary of Defense made it clear that the US military would support India in any situation of conflict. "I love the people of India and I love the people of China," Trump said, according to McKinney. That is why I am ready to make all the efforts that can bring peace between the two countries.

White House adviser Larry Cudlow on Thursday described India as America's most trusted ally. He said that PM Narendra Modi and Trump are good friends who are benefiting a lot in the relations between the two countries.

Pompeo also praised India

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also called India a "very good ally" on Wednesday and slammed China. "India is a big partner of the United States and without it, the idea of world peace is impossible," he said. On a number of issues, including the border clash with China, he called on India's External Affairs Minister S.K. Talks to Jaishankar.

"India is a big partner," Pompeo said. He is our important ally. I have a good relationship with my counterpart, the Foreign Minister. We often communicate on different issues. We have also discussed border clashes with China. The dangers posed by China's telecommunications infrastructure were also discussed.

China's aggressive stance

The United States withdrew its special status to Hong Kong after China enacted a new national security law. US President Donald Trump has announced that Hong Kong will be treated like China from now on.

He also said that Hong Kong would not be given special status and no special economic relations would be maintained with Hong Kong. The Chinese Foreign Ministry had approached US Ambassador Terry Branstad to protest the move.

Deputy Foreign Minister Zheng Zhengguan told Branstad that the move interfered in China's internal affairs and was a serious violation of international law. He told the US ambassador that China would take other measures, including banning US companies and individuals, to protect its interests. Earlier, China also threatened to retaliate against the United States with sanctions.
