A volunteer security guard is charged after he unintentionally fired his gun last month in a Lancaster County church, according to the district attorney's office.
William Mayes, 55, of Peach Bottom, is charged with simple assault and reckless endangerment.
The incident happened Feb. 9 at the Worship Center on New Holland Pike in Upper Leacock Township. Mayes was in an office with four other guards.
Investigators said Mayes exchanged handguns with another guard for the purpose of dry-firing the weapons to compare the trigger pulls and he unintentionally discharged a bullet.
Two of the guards were struck by bullet fragments when the round ricocheted off the floor, investigators said.
