Up to 17 students reported having trouble breathing after a student sprayed mace at DeLand Middle School
A DeLand Middle School student who sprayed mace at the campus on Friday was charged with disrupting a school function, police said.
Students at the school reported having trouble breathing, drawing officers and firefighters to the school shortly after 11 a.m., police said.
While the student did not spray the mace directly at anyone, the chemical affected up to 17 students, police said.
The students were treated by DeLand Fire and emergency medical services and were released and were not transported to a hospital, police said.
