Reading police narcotics units were called to an Albright College dormitory last week after campus security discovered marijuana and cannabis products in a room they thought had been vacated, officials said.
Albright security made the discovery Wednesday afternoon after checking the room in North Hall, 1965 Linden St., which was supposed to have been cleared out by Jahmal A.V. Reeves, 19, of Brooklyn, N.Y., who last occupied it, investigators said in court papers available Monday.
According to the criminal complaint:
A security officer detected a strong smell of marijuana smoke coming from the room and found Reeves inside and marijuana on a cabinet next to the door.
Reeves was detained while security searched the cabinet drawers. They found enough marijuana products to raise concern of security and contacted the city vice unit.
Vice detectives indicated the amount of drugs found indicated a possible drug-trafficking operation, so security continued the search. A search warrant wasn't needed because students who accept dorm room assignments sign waivers allowing their rooms to be searched under circumstances such as suspected illegal activity.
Security personnel located a large amount of cannabis products such as marijuana brownies, oils, vapes, pens and pills.
Reeves initially was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $20,000 bail following arraignment Wednesday night before Senior District Judge Thomas H. Xavios in Reading Central Court. Court records indicate Reeves was released after posting bail Friday to awaiting a hearing on charges of possessing and intending to deliver marijuana in different forms and possessing drug paraphernalia.
Reeves is no longer a student at Albright College, Carey Manzolillo, director of communications for Albright, said. The college does not release specific details of individual students, she said. Manzolillo had no further comment.
