101 new cases in Darj district; 35 in Malda


SNS, SILIGURI, 28 AUGUST 2020 : 65-year-old resident of Darjeeling died at the dedicated hospital for Covid-19 patients at Kawakhali in Siliguri today. He had been admitted in the Desun (Covid) hospital on 27 August.

Meanwhile, 101 Covid-19 cases were recorded in Darjeeling district in the past 24 hours. The Siliguri Municipal Corporation has registered 64 cases, of which 37 have been found in corporation areas falling in Darjeeling district

15 cases were detected in Naxalbari, 13 cases in Matigara, 9 in Kharibari and 1 case in Phansidewa blocks.

11 cases have been found at Sukna near Siliguri, including the Block Medical Officer of Health and some health workers, sources said.

Also, 9 new Covid cases have been found in Bijanbari, 3 in DarjeelingMunicipality, and 2 cases in Takdah, sources said.

Meanwhile, the dip in the number of corona virus cases in Malda continued for the fourth day today.TheVRDL in the Malda Medical College and Hospital detected only 35 cases among the 1136 samples it tested through the RT-PCR last night, sources said. "Today was the fourth consecutive day when the district reported positive cases less than 40," sources said.

Minister warns ambulance operators

State tourism minister Gautam Deb today warned ambulance operators for charging exorbitant rates from relatives of Covid patients.

Mr Deb's remarks come a day after an ambulance operator charged a family Rs 8,000 for ferrying a body to the Sahudangi crematorium in Siliguri.A man from Mateli in Jalpaiguri district died in a private nursing home in Siliguri, while the ambulance operators charged the family the sum, which included the cost of the PPEs. Earlier, another operator had demanded Rs 20,000 to ferry the body up to Mateli. "Some ambulance operators are demanding higher charges to carry the bodies of Covid-19 patients. I have asked the district magistrates of both Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri to convene meetings with ambulance operators and fix the charges. If complaints are received on overcharging, the administration has been asked to cancel their licenses and registration," Mr Deb said.

South Dinajpur readies for plasma therapy

The health department in South Dinajpur is all set to start plasma therapy for Covid- 19 patients.The blood bank in the District Hospital in Balurghat yesterday started plasma collection, and according to the District Health Department, Ramit Dey, the Medical Officer of the Balurghat Blood Bank, donated the first plasma in the district.

Dr Dey, the in-charge of the Balurghat hospital blood bank, was tested positive for the virus in the first week of July. He has, however already resumed duty after beating the virus. "The decision to begin plasma treatment was taken in a meeting of the Covid taskforce on Tuesday. The taskforce has decided to approach all Covid winners about plasma donation," sources said.

"According to guidelines issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research, the department has started contacting Covid winners in the district and requesting them to donate plasma so that other Covid patients' lives can be saved," a health official said.

According to the South Dinajpur Chief Medical Officer of Health, Sukumar Dey, one doctor and a former Covid patient donated plasma today. "Several more donors have been listed in different blocks, and their plasma will be collected in the near future," Dr Dey, said.
