A man working as a security guard at the Dagmar Hotel has been accused by Hagerstown police with shooting two men early Tuesday morning.
Gregory Ricardo Theratt II, 26, whose address was listed as the Dagmar, is accused of shooting Eric Davon Carter in the chest and Jerome Acree Jr. in the leg, according to the charging document. The injuries were not life-threatening, the document said.
Both were taken to Meritus Medical Center, the document said.
The shooting was called in about 2:15 a.m.
When police arrived, they were told they needed to speak with “Rico,” an employee who also lived at the Dagmar, 50 Summit Ave.
“I am not gonna lie. I am a felon, I ain’t supposed to have no firearm,” Theratt said when he spoke to police, the charging document said.
He told police Carter, whom he knew as Eric Scott or “Memphis,” was daring him to come outside and he shot him out of fear when he saw him reaching toward his hip.

Theratt had his wife retrieve the gun from their apartment, the document said. When the gun was handed over, Theratt told the officers it was loaded.
A check of the serial number also showed the gun had been reported stolen, the document said. Theratt told police he bought it through a friend three days earlier for $200.
Carter had been involved in an altercation outside the Dagmar a week or two before, the document said. Theratt told police he intervened to defuse the situation, which angered Carter.
Theratt said Carter came in Tuesday and talked to him about robbing the hotel. Not wanting to lose his job, Theratt told Carter to leave, according to the document.
Concerned Carter would come back, he went to his apartment, took the gun from a safe and put it in his waistband, the document said.
When Carter returned, they began arguing, and Theratt shot him when he saw Carter reach for his hip, the document said. Theratt said he fired a second shot, accidentally hitting Acree.
Police reviewed video and audio recorded by the hotel’s security cameras, the document said. In the video, Theratt is behind the security desk talking to Acree and another person when Carter walks in.
“I’ll fight anybody, I’ll shoot anyone,” Carter says at one point. Carter tells Theratt to “step outside” while removing his hat, the document said.
In the video, Theratt stands up and points the handgun at Carter’s head. Theratt then starts to turn away, and Carter asks if he is going to shoot him, the document said.
Theratt continued to walk away, but then turned and shot Carter, according to the video. A second shot hit Acree, the document said.
When he was shot, Carter had his arms at his side and was holding his black hat in his left hand, according to the description of the video in the charging document. He then doubled over and ran out the Summit Avenue entrance.
“You shot me in the leg, Rico,” Acree said on the video.
“I’m sorry,” Theratt tells him.
Theratt’s criminal record includes a 2012 armed robbery conviction in Prince George’s County, which disqualifies him from having a handgun, the document said.
Along with attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, Theratt is charged with first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a stolen firearm, use of a firearm in a crime of violence and other firearms offenses.
Theratt is being held without bond pending a hearing Wednesday in Washington County District Court.
